A Literary Rx

A Collaboration with Bellevue Literary Review

I recently co-hosted a sold-out Writers Read show at City Winery NYC with Dr. Danielle Ofri, editor-in-chief of Bellevue Literary Review.

"Body Language: True Stories of Illness, Recovery, and Discovery" was a celebration marking BLR's silver anniversary—25 years of publishing an award-winning independent literary journal. The show featured a curated cast of writers delivering raw, cathartic, and often funny five-minute personal narratives about the extraordinary demands placed upon the human body and mind. This profound exploration of medical vulnerability and human resilience caught national attention and was featured on PBS NewsHour as part of its Canvas arts and culture series, showcasing how powerful storytelling helps us navigate the complexities of health and healing.

At the wine reception in the gallery following the show I met another one of my heroes, Jeffrey Brown Senior Arts Correspondent for PBS News Hour. Jeffrey attended Body Language with producer Sam Weber to cover the event. The segment they produced was broadcast this week, and you can watch it here:

New Anthology

144 writers from around the country submitted their personal medical narratives for "Body Language." The sixteen stories we presented on stage are collected in our latest anthology—along with twenty more. That's three dozen beautifully crafted stories, each one complete in two pages. Buy a copy for your nightstand (or waiting room!), and buy another as a gift for someone in your life. Every purchase supports Writers Read's mission to create performance opportunities for writers.
